Acupuncture for infertility

In my practice I have treated many people for infertility. Most people who seek out acupuncture for infertility are women but I have also treated men and couples. Acupuncture is also very effective on the day of embryo transfer during IVF. In this posting I will focus on Acupuncture for women experiencing infertility.

Acupuncture works in many ways, with infertility there are afew strategic things that acupuncture helps with.

The first is hormone balance. Acupuncture is believed to send signals to the brain, with infertility acupuncture sends a message to the brain and resets the hormone levels to their normal and natural state.  Among these hormones are luteinizing hormone (LH) and its partner, follicle stimulating hormone(FSH).

The second area of focus is Ovulation. I have observed that many women are unaware of their exact ovulation time. Being unaware of the ovulation time may cause a couple to miss the window of opportunity for fertilization. I have also seen that many women do not ovulate or may only ovulate on one side. This can reduce your success rate by 50%. Acupuncture promotes circulation of energy and blood and can help unblock the fallopian tubes so ovulation is viable.

The third area of focus is relaxation. The pressure and worry of infertility can be very stressful to both partners. Acupuncture provides a moment of relaxation to help reduce the stress and pressure. This is emotionally beneficial to both partners and allows nature to take its course but stress is also physically detrimental. Stress hormones can inhibit other hormones that are necessary for optimal fertility and stress can obstruct the flow of Qi/energy and blood altering the menstrual cycle and ovulation.

Acupuncture is a safe and relatively inexpensive option to those looking for help with infertility. In my practice I have had great results and find that there is success after 4 to 6 normal menstrual cycles. Results vary depending on age, menstrual history and physical problems.

Here is some research from NIH on studies of acupuncture and infertility.
